Default 2011 18' FFX whater heater not heating, shutting off, no reset light coming on.

On a trip last week. Heater starts up and is heating. Then stops heating, but the reset light does not come on. Heater will start up again hours later but does not heat the water tank all the way. I am thinking some sort of thermostat issue, but not sure how to proceed.
Thanks,
Gervaise

Could be the thermostat. If your water heater is L.P. gas only, there is one thermostat, if it is gas and electric, there are two thermostats.

If you're on propane....
I would suggest a good cleaning. Remove the drain and blow out/flush any sediment that may have built up. If you wash out any corrosion then the gas valve may need to come out for inspection also as the t-stat operating coil is part of the gas valve.
