Anode Rod - Yuck!
So I finally got to winterize today. Pulled the anode rod and it looked pretty bad. I don't know how old it was, but since I only tested the water heater and never used hot water, it seems like it's been around. I don't know why non one makes a rod with a drain for the Suburban water heater. maybe it's so you have to pull it out to drain the tank and by default, you have to look at it. New one was $20 at CW.
I got tired of looking at the open cabinet where the TV used to be, so I ordered a door to cover it. Now the cabinets look complete.

The anode rod looks like most do after being in use for a year ~ anyway using local city water after it's been thru an in-house water softner.
They are made to erode instead of the inside of your water heater. 
I did purchase one with a built in petcock on the end of it but impossible to install due to the width of the 'handle' to open/close the petcock...... no way to get a socket over it and not adequate space to use a wrench to tighten/loosen it.
Removal allows one to observe the condition and if replacement is required.

Amazon is cheaper than CW. Also, Magnesium is better IMO than Aluminum.

For what its worth, a lot of RV articles indicate that Magnesium is better than Aluminum as an anode rod. The reason is that Magnesium is a much better sacrificial metal (i.e. electrochemistry wise) than aluminum when dealing with steel lined hot water tanks. If you have a suburban hot water tank, it is steel lined, so instead of the tank corroding, the anode rod will. Also, Aluminum may have unknown health issues where as Magnesium is relatively harmless. As for zinc, it is a good sacrificial metal also.

Marti & MT - I ordered the door from one of my suppliers. I do cabinet refacing for Sears and Home Depot (and a bit on the side). I forget what color Fun Finder calls it, but it's plain old Antique White. I don't know who make FF's doors, but this company makes one that is a perfect match. If any of you need doors, let me know. The company doesn't sell retail, but I can order them and have them shipped direct to you.

I didn't see the one on Amazon that fits a Suburban water heater. I was told that the one for the Atwood had different threads. I spent $20 on the magnesium OEM replacement at CW. Next time, I'll order from Amazon.
