Default Leaking around corrosion rod - water heater

I can't get the corrosion rod to screw all the way in and not leak.

I've soaked the rod end in CLR and scrubbed it with a wire brush. It's clean so it doesn't seem to be the problem. Yes, I used plumber's tape on it.
I've also tried a new rod which also leaks since I can't get it in very far.

The problem appears to be lime/rust in the water heater opening for the rod.
I soaked a paper towel in CLR and shoved it in the hole, let it sit for about 10 min, scrubbed it with a wire brush and rinsed it. I've done this a few times. I can get the rod to go in a bit further now but it still leaks.
I think the rust/lime is not coming off the top of the threads of the water heater with my paper towel/wire brush method.

So to the point, does anyone know a better way to get rid of the rust/lime build-up in the threading of the water heater tank? Particularly at the top.

Thanks,
Diverlady

Sounds like you need a pipe thread chaser or possibly a tap. Either way be very careful. There is a fine line between cleaning the threads and ruining them. If they are ruined it will mean time for a new water heater.

You have to get the threads really, totally clean. But I think you have already figured that out ! What I use is a stainless steel wire brush on those threads. You probably are going to have to really scrub a lot more than you think to get the threads clean.

Several wraps of teflon tape. See if that works. If not....you could likely seal the threads with by using pipe dope instead of teflon tape. Make sure you get the kind for water pipes. In theory, it remains pliable and you should be able to get the anode rod out at the end of the season.

Mine was the same way. The threads on the tank were corroded. I fixed the problem by rethreading the tank. I bought a section of threaded pipe at the hardware store. I used a hacksaw and cut six cross thread groves in the end. Using oil, I threaded the pipe in and out of the tank, each time a little further in. By going slow, the cut groves will slowly remove the corrosion. Good luck.

Using a pipe is a much better my idea of using a tap. Less chance of damaging the water heater threads.

Another great idea for folks! Kudos.
