That plumbers nightmare replaced the anode rod that belongs in the lowest fitting. Normally, you just remove the anode rod to drain the water heater. Someone must have wanted a draincock instead. I would flush out the water heater tank as best as you can. Hope it has not deteriorated too much for lack of an anode. Then install anode when going back in service. The other fitting or bung, is for an electric heater rod for heating water with shore power, saving propane.

That makes sense. THANKS for the quick response. I did flush it out. Should I leave it open for winter? Looked at hardware store for anode rod with no luck.

Hi, yes, I like to leave tank open over the winter. Just in case any water finds its way in, has a way out. Anodes are rv store or Amazon items. Most hardware stores won't be able to help. Good luck.

I always reinstall the anode rod after draining the water heater to assure no unwanted critter or dirt get into the water heater/water system.

Thanks guys. The new rod came in today from Amazon. Looks much neater without all the goofy adapters. I rinsed it out as good as possible using gallon jugs of hot water & a funnel before assembly.
