Book / resource for RVers

Is there a resource, ideally a book for when you don't have any cell signal, that lists places to stay overnight (including proper campgrounds, Wal-Marts, truck stops etc), places to dump waste and places to fill-up freshwater across the country? I've done some Googling but can't find anything definitive.

yes, and boy is it a pain in the neck ! It's the size of a phone book for a major city, and weighs about as much as a horse. And has many pages of really fine print. It does however, have the info you want

I don't know if that's the current version or not. I bought one about five years ago, and didn't like it because it was so big, klutzy and hard to read. I do all my stuff online now.

Or offline using "allstays" on the iPad.

I think it's the same book. But I really like that allstays site - and I think the mobile version is available offline on your phone/iPad so you don't need a data signal.

There is also an App called Sanidumps that is helpful. And here is a link to 10 other books including "Next Exit". Look for used versions on Amazon. Much less expensive.

Cool, thanks! The sanidumps app has found my two local dump stations buried deep in the CO mountains, so that bodes well. I'll check out those books.

The link to the one above is the most current version and is under $20 when ordered thru the Good Sam club for members.

BTW ~ in areas where there are Indian gambling casinos, often many of them provide overnight/short term RV parking at no charge or a small charge. Some include electrical hookups too.

Thanks, and nice to know about the casinos. With all these resources it should be possible to park up overnight some place along your route when you get tired and just need to sleep.

yes, "wally-docking" is kind of a whole subject unto itself. Some folks are fine with it, other folks find it hard to actually sleep well in a place like that ( or a truck stop ).

I stay in campgrounds, but then, when I travel, I like to stop by about four in the afternoon. Being retired and not having a hard schedule helps.....no worries if a "trip" takes a few extra days to complete.

Ha ha wally-docking! Never heard that one. I'm totally used to sleeping on the side of the road - when I was a kid growing up in England my dad and I used to have a motocross race transporter (basically a giant box van, coachbuilt inside) and we'd regularly pull in to a layby at the side of the road to sleep for the night while traveling to the races. It's really just for finding places to park up overnight when I run out of driving energy.

Stopping alongside the road at a rest stop, etc. USED to be no problem some years ago.

Today, most rest stops have signs "NO OVERNIGHT PARKING" or similar wording.

Just pulling off on an approach into a field (two lane road) for the night will bring a law enforcement to your RV door in short order and be told to "move along" as will pulling off into a huge store parking lot, except for wallyworld where allowed.

No longer is parking 'just anywhere' for the night acceptable ~ nor safe!

When in google maps - and you've selected an area - in the google maps search box enter "campgrounds", or "state park campgrounds" or "city park campgrounds" "country park campgrounds".
Yes - requires a computer. Requires internet connection.
But the results are great.

The wife wants to get to the destination and back... However, as an old retiree that traveled in my job for some 40 years, I like to slow down, look at the sights, meet people, and just plain smell the roses!!

We stop at a Wally once in a while, but like you, I am a big one for campgrounds. I like the lack of people coming and going all hours of the day & night; I feel more relaxed and also rest better at most campgrounds.

In traveling across country the last two years, I found several nice, small campgrounds that were reasonably priced AND many offered Good Sam discounts of an additional $3 to $6 dollars.

Another great bennie over Wally, is you can drop the trailer and drive into town to shop, take a drive/hike, or take in a cool restaurant.

Not all Walmarts allow overnight parking due to local ordinances. Best to check with the store first.
