Default Operating the Fan-tastic fan

How is the best way to operate the Fan-tastic fan? We have cool nights and hot days here in the Carson Valley. My fan has a thermostat control. With the in/out function and thermostat, I wonder the best way to trap the cool morning air and dispell the hot afternoon air to minimize the use of the air conditioner. In/out, closing windows, etc? Anyone with experience in this?

When it's cool outside, use the fan to suck air in....windows open helps.
When hot inside, use fan to blow air out so A/C doesn't have to work so hard to cool the interior.....then off once temp inside is dropping, windows closed.
Just how I do it.
