Default Colorado campers

Do any of you Colorado folks boondock? I'm looking for places that aren't too crowded along the Front Range. We don't need a lot of additional activities as we like to just hang out and read when the grandkids aren't along. TIA

Are you interested in areas around Crested Butte, Silverton, or Ridgeway? Or is that too far west?

That's a bit too far west, but Ridgeway or Crested Butte might work for long weekends.

In Crested Butte, check out the Washington Gulch area -- lots of sites, not far from town. The weekends get kind of busy, though.

Near Ridgeway, check out the south end of Silver Jack Reservoir -- again, lots of sites, not as busy. You can get there from Cimarron, as well as from Ridgway.

You probably already know this, but here is a tip -- download the Motor Vehicle Use Maps from the national forests. They show the roads that are open to boondockers.

Good luck!!

Thanks, I'll definitely download the maps, and we'll try to check out the spots you've suggested.

Lost park area is great and close to you. Also south if tarryall reservoir there are lots of great spots. Four mile area in buena vista is a favorite too. We camped at the Buena Vista Koa and tooled around four mile all weekend scoping out spots for the next time.

I boondock in many areas in Colorado but have not been to the front range area, to far from me in Durango, sorry.

You probably already know this, but there's quite a bit of boondocking between Buena Vista and Gunnison.

Last summer I was on my way to Tin Cup but my truck has a mechanical problem while going into Gunnison from Lake City, so I had to head back to Durango, will try that again this summer.
