Yup ~ just like the trains. They always show up blocking the roadway when you are in hurry or going to lunch!

Yup, they run trucks filled with sand/salt mixture and a big V plow or straight blade on the front here too in the country. About 50 MPH sounds right.

I haven't seen any fresh salt on the roads here yet. But I do see the sand in the middle that I mentioned before. And the plow truck was going by a lot one day earlier in the week. Just sand today. Salt isn't effective under a certain temperature, like 15 degrees or so??

Greetings from Maryland
Our street crew says salt does no good in the long run when temps are at or below freezing because when it warms up (air temp) enough for the salt to melt the ice and then it freezes again, it will make the street/road slick again. Sand only works for traction and, again, only above freezing, doesn't help on ice! We are supposed to be getting freezing rain after 5 tonight, maybe, and the majority of the freezing rain/ice coming Sunday with up to an inch accumulation!

I have to disagree with your road crew. Salt is effective below freezing. It does clear the road, at least here in Michigan. I think scraping busy roads a lot causes roads to be slicker; especially where there is a lot of traffic. Driving on snow to me is better than that for traction.
