Default New X189FDS Owner

Picked up our, first ever, TT in Ca. and went to Morro Bay for a 1 night stay. Used everything inside the TT and all worked just great. Temp got down to 40 and didn't need the heat till the am. Went from sea level, over 2000 ft mountains, extremely windy, and TT followed the truck very well. But I think that can improve with a Equalizer. The Prodigy P3 seemed to grab at 20-30 mph when coming to a stop, will have to work on adjusting it for a smoother stop. Our 2 small dogs took to this new mode of travel just fine, couldn't get them out of the bed.
Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks
Gordon

Hi, & welcome to the forum. Just like you I bought my first ever TT in October and I'm still figuring it all out. But so far I love it.

I have an equalizer hitch and it really does make a difference. I don't have the sway control, but so far I haven't needed it. I think you just have to fine tune the controller as you said to stop the grabbing.

The 189 is a nice setup, and it should tow very nicely with a 1/2 ton.

I can't speak for the equalizer hitch.

Personally I wouldn't bother with an equalizer with your setup. Waste of money. Just buy some sort of sway device and be done with it.

You really only need a Weight distribution hitch when your truck's rear end is sagging because of the trailer. These FF have really light tongue weights

I would measure on your truck from the ground to the highest point of the wheel well lip on the front axle, then the rear axle. Then hook up the trailer and do the same. How much does it move.. I'm willing to bet it doesn't. One other thing to consider is have you experienced the front of your truck "floating" when going over bumps towing? If not, then no need for a WD hitch.

I towed with a borrowed f150 4x4 scsb for the first summer I owned our trailer. The WD hitch actually made the towing experience worse, so much so that I removed my WD bars halfway through a trip.

What I'm trying to say, is that WD hitch is meant to transfer weight to the front wheels of the tow vehicle.

Although my trailer has almost half the tongue weight as yours, so you may want to try one more trip, and see if you experience the bouncing. then make your decision.
