Have you checked out the options from 3M Command? They have several different sized caddies available that attach with the command strips so no drilling required and they can be easily removed if needed.
We have caddies on either side of the bed where we put our glasses, cell phones and other small odds & ends.
The downside is they are somewhat weight limited so if kids have heavy stuff, these probably won't work.
