Mine is put away for the winter too, but if I recall correctly when I did measure it, a 19" or 20" (diag) was the max.
What I did find out was whether or not it fit with the existing mount that was the problem. I tried something larger (19") at one time, but I had to turn the mounting bracket over to make it fit the tv, which then didn't fit into the opening (hung too low).
So its not just the size, but how the existing mount lined up that you have to take into consideration.
