Default Wheel base?

What is the general consensus on wheel base affecting towing? We tow a 139 with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I imagine the longer the wheel base - the more stable. But I was pretty happy yesterday with how ours handled on the interstate. We do have sway bar and weight distribution hitch. Does the length of the trailer make a difference?

I think every combination of tow vehicle/trailer is unique. Of course ideally, the heavier the vehicle, the longer the wheel base, etc. the better for towing. But what is the minimum? That is tougher. I think you really have to try it our before you know. There are so many variables.

From what I have read, the weel base won't really come into play until you get into a panic stop or high cross wind. With the single axel TT you will notice ' bounce regardles of wheelbase of the tow vehical. Your Jeep has a pretty long wheel base compared to even a lot of pickups.

Default Wheel base

HI,
Even though this was originally posted some time ago, I want to add a reply for those people just joining the club or checking in. My first TV for my FF189FBR was a Jeep Liberty. It was able to handle towing the trailer weight flat and climbing without problems. But I passed my Liberty onto my teenage daughter and purchased a larger Jeep Commander to tow the trailer with because of one factor...WIND. That factor is not listed when calculating weights and length, engine size, etc. Think about the fact your pulling a tall light weight vehicle with tandem wheels (little space between them), and you've hooked it up to a Liberty, tall light weight with a short distance wheel base. It only took 25 to 30 mph winds to scare the you know what out of me on the highway, and when some of the big trucks/trailers passed me, I felt it. Now with the Commander, I do not worry about the wind until it is much more severe, and I am able to pass and be passed by trucks and large vehicles without the "pull" or "sway" Be safe out there!
