I want to install a backup camera that comes on whenever I have the trailer lights on. I have tested by using the 12v in the back of my car so I know everything works.
Two questions
I tried connecting the wires directly to the TT battery no go. Tried with car running as well. Any idea why?
I was thinking of tying into one of the running lights but they are LED. Can I connect toons of them.
Not sure why you want to have the backup camera on when the trailer lights come on, normally it would be wired into the backup light circuit. And I'm assuming you mean the running lights.
You should be able to tie it to the tow vehicles light circuit. Turn on the headlights or parking lights and you've got 12V to the camera and the trailer running lights.
If I power it off the trailer lights it will only come on when the trailer is being towed and I won't have another thing to plug in and unplug. I want it so I have a better picture of what is behind me. If the trailer had normal lights I would not have a problem but the trailer has LED lights that are new tome.
Yep... RVs are wired like houses, not like cars. Black is hot, white is ground/neutral (no separate ground and neutral). It gets to be confusing until you get used to it. Just remember that your RV is a "rolling house" and the wiring is just like your home. Once you get passed that, it will come a lot easier
