Default Battery or propane when traveling?

we just came back from our "maiden" trip & hubby hooked up battery for the fridge while traveling. Is that ok or should we have put it on propane? Kept everything cold I might add.

My fridge only has the option of 120 V or propane. I run it on it propane when I'm on the road. I'm sure running on 12V would be fine as well.
