I did, however, have to lift a burned pickup in a storage yard that several died in for some GM factory people. They took photos of every inch of the vehicle regarding a lawsuit brought against the mfg. It was all rusted metal ... but the still aroma lingered.
My Dad had a garage and wrecker in the 60's and I often rode on wrecker-calls, and was his helper when needed... One call I remember was a complete burn; you are correct, it is not pleasant, and I can still remember the aroma... I don't care to see another...

As far as fuel is concerned, unless they have really changed diesel, it burns; it's just not as explosive as gasoline... And if possible, it is best not to get in an accident in the first place...

We drove the truck 100 miles yesterday to our mechanic for an inspection. They wrote up a work order for $3000 worth of future repairs. Nothing immediate or crucial. We took that back to the dealer. The salesman said they would never lower the price by $3k; but he asked for a copy and said he would run it by his boss and call us back. We would split the cost, but are fine with passing it up even though it is exactly what we are looking for and has s very solid engine and body. We averaged 17.8 miles per gallon on the 100 mile trip. Not much less than our Jeep Liberty. Also our mechanic said he thought that dealership is a good one.

When you say 'future repairs' what does that mean exactly? That almost sounds more like maintenance work. Especially on an older truck. If they are talking things like tires, belts, radiator flush, etc. that could run up a big bill from a mechanic pretty quickly if done all at once. If that's the case and you can the seller to knock off $1500 or $1000 and you like the truck that doesn't sound like a bad deal.

The owner of the dealership called and offered $500. But not $1500. No, not really maintenance items. Rebuilding the differential bearings, rear brake rear calipers, rotors and pads, transmission oil cooler lines seeping (not unusual), front wheel bearings, mass air flow sensor. BUT the dealers mechanic disagrees. We will counter at $750 now. The light was on when we first looked at it. They scanned it and it was mass flow sensor. The salesman said they would fix that before delivery. That was written up as over $300.
The other thing about this truck is that it is pre 2008; before the EPA changes that changed things.

That's a great motor. I have a couple of friends that have that same combo with 150k miles or so. The only thing they have had issue with is the EGR Manifold. It plugged twice on one and once on the other. I understand it is fairly easy to clean, and it didn't cost them much to have it done. They said it makes the truck feel like you are losing the turbo when it plugs up.

My 2012 F-250 has the modern diesel emissions, uses DEF etc. It's quieter than my '14 gasser, get's way better mileage both unloaded and when I'm towing, and has 400 hp and 800 ft lbs of torque. DEF get's filled when I get the oil changed and the only way I know it is cleaning the exhaust system is if I happen to be looking at the screen when it flashes that it is doing so.

Thanks for the reply. That is good information. Glad to hear your report on your 2012. That is amazing torque!! The Duramax is good at 650 though. Our old '89 Ford 350 was pretty simple but a loud and smelly polluter.

I have a tuner for it that has three tunes. One tune just changes the shift points in the transmission. The second one is a tow tune and adds 40 hp and 80 ft lbs of torque (it also gets about 1 mpg better) and the hot tune adds 90 hp and 180 ft pounds of torque!!! I've only had that one in the truck twice, once when I got it and once when my neighbor bought a brand new Dodge 1500 with a "Hemi". I called his truck cute and he took offence to it and challenged me to a race. LOL

I see you have a motorized kayak. We watch a guy on YouTube that has a couple of these. He bought them used in Florida. His channel is called Aquachigger. He does metal detecting, and other ghings.

Amazing in the rivers. No propellers. Jet propulsion so no hang ups. Check out his channel's videos on them. They really move. But pricey.

Thank you John. It really is a nice truck. Very smooth and quiet for a diesel. More features than we we have ever had in a vehicle. Heated leather seats, Bose speakers, dual climate controls, a cap, power everything, Reese fifth wheel rails in the bed, new tires, etc. Our vehicles are usually pretty Spartan. The only thing that would have been nice would be 4 wheel drive. We will miss that. But we'll buy the bags of softener salt to put over the rear wheels. We left our Jeep Liberty there to be detailed before we sell it.

The truck came from Florida and as I said before, no rust!!! The mass air flow sensor code apparently was caused by a K&N filter. They gave us an oem filter. The K&N was pretty dirty. And we've heard the sensor itself needs periodic cleaning.
I'll put some pics in my gallery temporarily since I still haven't mastered how to put them in a post.

It should definitely do the job with our little guy. We just camped in Michigan last year where the hills aren't too high. The Liberty did it, but not without some huffing and puffing on the bigger hills. It has a 5000 pound tow capacity and we were approaching that I think. But this one is also for a future upgrade to a bigger trailer. Maybe a larger interim used trailer. Or for future full time fifth wheel next year???
