Thanks for the edmucational tips folks, I feel like a DA, but no manuals and previous owner had no clue.
Most critical thing is to make sure there is water in the tank before you light it up. Hook up the water, turn on the pump, and open a hot water faucet till the water starts to run out. Then the water heater is ready to light.
Might be a good idea to remove the anode and flush the tank first. And if the anode is shot, get a new one. And let us know if this is all Greek to you -- always happy to explain more, if necessary! The only dumb question is the one not asked.
