Default Yet another question

We have a box in the front storage compartment with a knob on it and electrical wires coming out of it. You can pull the knob out or push it in. Does anyone know what it is for? I posted a photo in my gallery on here but they chose to display it sideways for some reason.

Looks like a disconnect switch/knob but odd location, however, I'm not familiar with your particular unit.

Hmmm...good thought...one set of wires goes to the passenger running light. The other wires run behind the front wall. Maybe a disconnect for the battery?

Yes, I was thinking a battery disconnect switch.

Well we turned a light on and pushed the knob in and out and the light stayed on. It is a junction box according to Paul but he doesn't know what the knob does. The pigtail and the battery both connect to the box.

But they wouldn't have spent $1 for the switch and $1 to install it without some purpose ????

Maybe unscrew the box cover and see what wires connect to the switch?

Well it appears that the wires go to the marker lights and out the front to the battery, etc. Maybe someone else with a 189 FBR would know what the knob does.

Hi Mich,
My FF is an '08, 19 ft. I have a push-pull switch located in the exterior, forward storage compartment (the only ext. storage compartment) that disconnects the battery to the trailer 12 volt circuits, BUT only seems to work when NOT connected to shore power, as shore power bypasses battery. Note: I was told to leave this on while towing to provide 12 volts to the trailer brakes in case of a break-away, AND I ran the batteries pretty low this last trip when I accidentally pulled the trailer break-away cable, inadvertently applying the brakes all night long.... lucky I didn't burn them out...
Hope this helps...

John, thank you!!!! We have the trailer plugged into the house electric and now you have told us why the knob didn't seem to do anything. Your trailer is like ours I think, other than being a toy hauler. It all makes sense now. Glad your rig is ok. So many things to remember on these rigs, big or small. This forum is great!

On more thing. Is pulling the knob out "on" and pushing it in "off"? Or just the opposite? Too bad they mounted it on the floor. It takes up room and can be bumped inadvertently, as well as being hard to get to when you have cargo in there.

Pulling the knob out is on and pushing it in is off.

I leave the 'disconnect switch' pulled out all the time so the shore power cord will charge the battery and there is power to the electric brakes when towing.

Makes sense. I think we will maybe fix something up so that it won't get bumped off accidentally by the cargo. Thanks again!

Just in case one of the highly qualified electrician monkeys at the factory messed up, I'd double check the switch.

Simple test:

1. Disconnect the shore power.
2. Turn on lights inside the camper.
3. Push the switch in and see if the lights go out = no power from the battery.

It's raining ice now so further trailer fun will have to wait.

Yes John. I think you would like the Keewenaw Peninsula and Copper Harbor. Have you visited there before? We'll be camping at Fort Wilkins SP and F.J. McClain SP up there. I wish we could take the motorcycles.

Hi Mich,
No, I have not been to Michigan yet, but am looking forward to a trip this summer. Do these spots fill quickly and do I need to make res way in advance?

Thanks for the tip about Battery cut-off and trailer brakes, hadn't thought of that. My prev. Fun Finder was an 07 189 FBR and it didn't have said switch while my friend's 09 189 FBR did have one in the pass thru as described. Currently own a '13 189 FDS and the cut off switch is on the monitor panel near the door as you enter. Seems like a better location but is still subject being bumped into the off position as we found out on last trip in a brief moment of panic when at first the slide wouldn't retract.

I had the same problem with the cutoff switch on my X-139 -- it is on the panel near the floor and kept getting bumped. So I put a small cup hook over the shaft of the button puller, so that it won't go in accidentally. But it is easy to remove the cup hook and push it in, to cut off the battery.
