Default GPS map updates

Anyone else taken in by GPS manufacturers' "lifetime updates"? I bought a Magellan Roadmate because it had US and Canadian campgrounds installed and had "lifetime" map updates.
Recently I wondered why I could not get any new map updates, and was amazed to read on Magellan's website that "lifetime" for them means the "useful lifetime of the product - three years". Obviously a GPs will last a lot longer than three years, mine still works fine except when I am on a "new" piece of road that is not on the map. Why don't they come out and say three years of updates? It is pretty much misleading advertising.

I just use Google Maps for directions. And my favorite part is that it is free!

Garmin still provides map updates to my 10yo device. No problems. I did recently buy an updated model and it is way better, faster.

We head pretty deep into national forests … usually 10-20 miles outside of any cell service - GPS always works.

FWIW, we use iHike GPS for our off-grid travel. It's great. But you have to remember to download the topo maps (which are free) while you've still got cell coverage.

Garmin would update....if I had a PC. It won't mix with my Chromebook.....

We have a garmin also .. wife updates it at home on the computer every spring...and operates it as I have no idea how that electronic junk works for programming.

I stumble around on the computer but sometimes screw it up and she has to do the fix it so it works again. Admit I'm a computer neanderthal.
