Default Reservations set for South Dakota trip in June

Well, just finished getting our reservations for our trip in June. Since I know DH wouldn't want to drive 10 hours straight towing our 19' TT, our first stop will be at Holiday RV Campground in North Platte, Nebraska for the night. Getting a 15% discount by having GS membership and paying with cash! Cha-Ching! Will be staying here on return trip as well!

Then, off to Custer City, SD and Beaver Lake Campround. Got the last pull-thru with full hookups for length of our stay.

Now, is it really almost 5 months until June?

Howdy Kansas newbie,
That sounds like a great trip... I wish you a great trip and take lots of pics!!!

I may be not be making the AZ camping trip this year... My daughter is planning on getting married next winter in AZ, and I need to be there for that. Sooo... I am trying to work out our logistics, and because of winter weather, the Boss and I may end up flying there and then renting a car... We are not sure, but two trips to AZ in the same year is getting too spendy for an old retired guy...

First of all, congrats about your daughter's upcoming wedding! I also understand about not being able to make two trips in one year that covers so much ground! Perhaps next year?

Oh, that's great! Last year at this time I was making reservations and plans for Michigan State Park campgrounds and got some great sites because of it. Getting reservations early is a good idea. All I remember about North Platte is Roger Welsh on the old Sunday Morning program would always show the Sandhills Cranes gathering there by the thousands in his Postcard from Nebraska segment. The Black Hills are something! August is busy...lol!

John, that's big news! Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming marriage! We understand perfectly about the costs of making long trips. It seems like there are always unexpected expenditures popping up that sabotage our fixed retirement budget. Plane travel seems so expensive and uncomfortable now too. Gone are the days of cheap flights and no layovers. But I know how you looked forward to your trips down there for your hobby. Could you take the RV to the wedding and extend the trip to do your thing? Or is there too much equipment involved?

Congratulations on getting a reservation. It looks like a nice campground I've never visited as usually stay further north in the Hills.

Many, many things to see as you will have a full schedule. enjoy!!

I did a bunch of research on campgrounds in SD. Could've stayed at a KOA, but wanted to experience among trees without being in national parks. Love my hookups! LOL! Decided on Beaver Lake because DH likes his tv and we don't have satellite. We got the last pull through with hookups! Sure hope we like it, will be there for 4 days. ⛺

I too select sites with full hookups and cable tv as enjoy it in the early AM and evening viewing for news/weather & good movie, if any.

A drive thru Custer State Park; visiting one or two caves; seeing Mt. Rushmore is free but paid parking only now; a drive thru the Needles Highway and thru Spearfish Canyon (a must) are a few things I' recommend. Deadwood is a commercialized casino town but visit Boot Hill cemetary (very interesting) and Keystone is a great 'tourist trap' wide spot on the road. Maybe a visit to the Homestake Gold Mine or at least visit the open pit gold mine - free viewing.

Enjoy.

Default Reservations set....

Yep, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devil's tower, Deadwood, 1880 train are all on the itinerary. Needles highway is on it , too, but don't know if DH will want to go as he will be driving! . Would love to go through Custer Park as well. So many things want to do (Wall Drug is also a "wanna see") but not much time! Just as long as we see the big 3 monuments, will deem the trip a success. That and not having any "issues" with the TT.⛺

1880 train = nice ride. Suggestion, sit in an enclosed car and NOT one with an open top unless you love eating soot from the coal fired steam engine.

Don't ask how I know this!!

Wall Drug is...interesting. It's a pretty eclectic mix of stuff.

Bear Country USA was cool. I even had a wolf try and remove my spare tire cover, and the folks in the RV behind me got a photo of it.

I could go back to the Crazy Horse memorial in 40 years, and I wonder how much progress would have been made since I stopped in there last time.

The family will probably 'milk' the Crazy Horse monument for another 150 years as a real cash cow for them.

Agreed. It's not Mt. Rushmore.

You can really see all you need to see from the highway without going in.

If you pay to enter you will visit their story behind the carving and their tourist trap shop.

Eagle...
We already went to South Dakota last week. Had a great time, but had to delay our departure from campground in Nebraska by a day due to the storms that went through our route. We were able to do some shopping in N. Platte and "scored" a counter top (which we put in the shower-LOL) ice maker for $88.88 at Shopko! When we went back there on our trip home, it was on sale again for $129.99!
Anyway, because we had to cut our time by one day, we weren't able to go to Devil's Tower or Deadwood as we planned . As soon as I can download pics from camera, will post in my gallery. BTW- if anyone is planning to go to the Badlands this summer and you haven't already made reservations, you may be disappointed as I was told all campgrounds from Hot Springs to Strugis in all directions are booked through the Sturgis rally! Sure am glad I booked our vacation in January!

Glad you had an enjoyable trip even with a few bumps ... storms are unpredictable as you know.

Will be great to see the pics if you can post them.

Even tho some claim all the campgrounds are booked .. there are always a few with openings ~ that has been my experience over the years going to Sturgis as always located a campground right up to the first day of the Sturgis Rally.

Pictures are in the gallery. For some reason, though, not all of them loaded! At least I figured out how to get them off my phone camera to here...
