2020 City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Update

The Sturgis City Council has announced that a modified 80th Annual City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is being prepared. The event will have significant changes to city-sponsored events with the intention of safeguarding the community and residents.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Sturgis has taken a proactive approach in completing an in-depth process to determine the best path moving forward in an effort to protect the residents, while considering if or how to host the annual event. This process has included monitoring COVID-19 infection rates, and extensive communication with local health care providers. City staff and Council members have participated in more than 100 calls with various federal, state and local agencies, communities, chambers of commerce, businesses, governmental officials, and Meade 46-1 School District. A special town hall meeting was hosted on June 8 to hear comments and concerns from residents, businesses, and Rally enthusiasts.

After considering many options, the City Council voted in favor of moving forward with preparations for the large influx of tourists and participants coming to enjoy the Black Hills, with a focus on preserving the safety of our residents. Attendees will be asked to be respectful of the community concerns by practicing social distancing and taking personal responsibility for their health by following CDC guidelines. Enhanced safety and sanitization protocols will be carried out for rally goers, including public hand sanitizing stations throughout the downtown area. In additional to the normal cleaning efforts, nightly sanitization of sidewalk areas will take place in the downtown area. Temporary vendors will be asked to abide by state and federal protocols and guidelines related to COVID-19. PPE will be available for all city staff, and any businesses that have issues with finding available personal protective equipment for their employees.

The City of Sturgis will continue to encourage any and all residents to utilize the Sturgis Good Deeds program for any of their local shopping needs. This program began in March to aid residents with pre-existing conditions, those in the high-risk category, or those with general health concerns with grocery or other essential needs by contactless deliveries free of charge. This service is conducted by City staff and a host of wonderful volunteers.

The City sponsored celebratory events including opening ceremonies, parades, B1 Flyover, and entertainment and live music at Harley-Davidson Rally Point have been canceled. Photo towers will not be installed. These changes are designed to reduce the large crowd gatherings in the downtown core. We look forward to offering events again in 2021.

To assist with traffic flow, the City will have temporary traffic controls in place and transportation services will be available. Motorcycle parking in the downtown areas will continue as in past years, with the ability to reduce the footprint if needed. Additional staff will be available to provide fire, ambulance, and law enforcement services for the City of Sturgis and the surrounding area.

In the event of a health emergency, the Sturgis Mayor has the authority to modify these plans as necessary upon notification from the local health officials, the State Department of Health, the Governor’s Office, or the CDC.

The City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is an icon of American Freedom and Independence. The City of Sturgis has been the pre-eminent host of this event for decades and welcomes each visitor to the event. We ask that attendees help maintain the safety of our community and guests alike by respecting protocols and guidelines. We look forward to celebrating the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in grand style in 2021.

----------
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the largest motorcycle rally in the world. It is held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota for 10 days. 2020 will mark the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held August 7th-16th 2020

IF the rally were cancelled, real estate taxes would increase at least 15% along with many increases in various fees for the residents .... that is how much money the rally brings into the Black Hills.

First went in 1963 ... missed a few years and then annually from 1981 forward.

Will be there again this year too!

Making this road trip more interesting as leaving early and spending some time in Medora ND at Red Trails Good Sam campground and tour the Roosevelt National Park as never been there.
From Roosevelt National Park, will travel south west to stay in Hardin Montana for a few days at another Good Sam campground and visit the Custer National Battlefield and look around the area. I expect that to be interesting as well.
Leaving Hardin Montana, will take the interstate south and east to Custer SD and stay at the Rafter Bar J Ranch Good Sam campground just south of Hill City SD. Great campground and have stayed there before. Will tour thru the Black Hills of South Dakota and make a short visit to Sturgis to check it out as well.
Expecting a great trip and good weather doing this approximately 1,600 + mile circle and....hopefully in the mid 70's so not to damn hot.

Been to Medora ND and visited the Teddy Roosevelt National Park and some other neat sights in the area. Weather was hot .. 95 degrees. UGLY!!! Buffalo were on the roadway in the Nat'l park and pretty much blocked the roadway for some 20 minutes. A big bull took a liking to my left rear tire .. spend some time licking it. LOL They are NOT afraid of vehicles but would never be stupid enough to get out with them around.
Currently in Hardin Montana and visited the Custer National Monument today. Didn't realize the battle took place over such a large area... several miles before Custer was killed. Also didn't know there was a huge national veterans cemetery located there.
Interesting/educational visit even tho the visitors center was closed due to chinese virus and all stores require masks to enter. And again, the weather was damn HOT, near 100 degrees. UGLY!
NO dumb mask crap in South Dakota or North Dakota. Can't breath in those stupid things!! And unless N-95 certified and properly & professionally fitted to an individual can be worse than no mask at all from recent medical report read yesterday.
Anyway, tomorrow going to campground just south of Hill City SD and spend a few days in the Black Hills and visit Sturgis too.
So far, the tow vehicle and camper all functioning properly and as they should.
BTW ---- in Dish network satellite TV system acquired/installed just prior to this trip works GREAT!!! Also the 3 new recliners added after ripping out the horseshoe dinette is a huge comfort improvement! Lovin' it.

If you stop posting in a month or so I will assume you catch Covid-19 and joined General Custer. In the mean time have fun.

Back home this morning.

Montana has a state issued mask wearing thing........and the ONLY place anyone was wearing one was in a business place where they are required w/signs posted on the entrance doors & provided free is needed. Once outside, no mask wearing at all.

Lots of people from all over in Medora ND with only a few 'out of staters' wearing a mask...that would be about 5%. No mask requirements in North Dakota. BTW, if visiting Medora and the Roosevelt National Park - there are 0 fast food places to eat in Medora. One of the few places ever been with 0 fast food places.

In the Black Hills, saw a few 'out of state' people wearing a mask but there were very few. No mask requirement in South Dakota....land of the free.

Sturgis was busy but not nearly a busy are other years. I'd guess traffic/visitors down a minimum of 50 -60% for the annual motorcycle rally. A noticeable lack of vendors this year. NO ONE seen wearing a mask. On the last day, about 5-6 BLM idiots showed up and the police were protecting them from the crowd who hurled all sorts of colorful words at them but there was no violence.

Had a great trip, zero issues expected/experienced with the toy hauler or tow vehicle so all went excellent.

Glad y'all had a good time. Just saw a youtube vid on Medora and they said there's no grocery stores in town either. Roosevelt NP is on our bucket list.

Correct --- no grocery store but there is a "C" store where one can get some items but not a full grocery store.

I wasn't overly impressed with Roosevelt NP. IMO the Badlands in South Dakota are superior as are the Black Hills.

The Chateau de Mores was worth seeing ... a huge house in it's day. The family was from Europe and led development of the town. & friends w/T. Roosevelt.

Back in the day, it must have been a great hunting area for bear, deer, elk, etc.

Hey, I'm still posting and going wherever I want, eating in restaurants and no mask wearing and not hiding or self-imprisonment, like some, either.

Walmart 'suggests' wearing a mask but don't have to....same at the local post office.
