Battery switch

On our 189FBR we have a "battery switch" in the front storage area - at least I think that's what it is. Tried pushing it both ways and we still get power from the battery into the trailer (lights work). So what's it for? Or is it not working properly?

We don't have a manual to show how to work everything and we're just testing things out and learning.

Anything we need to watch out for or "don't do"?

We still haven't tested the water pump or hot water heater yet but that's on our list before we head for Utah. Just got all new tires and 2 new spares. Getting it loaded with food stuff and bedding.

thanks,

What you're describing indeed sounds like the battery switch. Pushing it "in" disconnects the battery and pulling "out" connects the battery.

If it doesn't seem work I can think of a couple of possibilities. Either it was not wired properly from the factory, or if you bought the trailer used it may have been bypassed by the PO. Lastly if you are plugged into 120V shore power the lights will still come on even if the switch is off.

Assuming the switch is indeed working, you want to be sure it's in the "on" position when you're towing. It's a safety measure. The battery is needed to engage the trailer brakes in the event of a breakaway. Of course it's location also makes it susceptible to being shut off inadvertently when you're putting cargo in the storage compartment or if cargo shifts during motion.

LJ,
Thanks for the info. Will have hubby check it out. Didn't know that about the break away so definitely will leave it hooked up. When we towed it home we unhooked the battery cable...won't do that again! But we didn't want the rv battery charging off the truck.

thanks again,
