We're just returned from our first outing in our fun finder and I'm still going over all the basics. One being draining the water heater, just because I don't know that it has been done in a long time and I want to check the annode. Reading the manual is no help re: draining but I conclude the the actual drain is the annode. Am I correct here? I am also off to Home Depot for a 1 1/16" socket as there looks to be no room to use any type wrench.

Yup ... the anode is also the drain plug and it takes a large socket; 1 1/16" sounds about right.

Open the hot water faucet inside the trailer to de-pressurize before you unscrew the anode. Otherwise it can shoot out, damage a nearby parked car, and spray you with water. Please don't ask me how I discovered these facts.

Drain

Thanks guys, hope I remember to open a faucet and I have something to turn the huge socket with, don't think my 1/4 inch rachet will do.

I open the pressure relief valve at top of tank and the water comes out nice and even and no pressure on anode when removed.

The job is done, the old anode looked pretty rough. I also opened the pressure relief along with the faucets and it all ran out freely. Now I'll be 48 lbs. lighter when I take off for next trip.

I completely drain the fresh water tank and the water heater after every trip as I usually travel with some water to flush the stool when traveling, if needed.

And...don't forget to refill the hot water tank before you turn on your water heater the next time you use it. Just like profdant139 said, just don't ask me how I know....
