Hi, I just joined the forum. I've been reading here for about two months and I know someone can help me. We bought a 2007 189 FBS (in great condition) with the door on the bunk taken down and replaced with curtains. The mattress is gone, and little strips of wood (dividers?) are screwed in at various intervals in the floor of the bunk space. The floor appears to be little more than a sheet of luan, which won't support much weight. We have the door, and the rails are still in place.

What size mattress fits up there? When we take up those wood strips, what should we put down as the platform for the back half of the bunk, or was it originally that flimsy? The door appears to be thicker than the platform over the bed, but I haven't actually compared the two. I should add that I have the door at the house, and the unit is on the farm 10 mi. away, under the tractor shed, so I have to take all my material when I go work on it. We've already cut two piece of styrofoam to fit the back of the small storage doors, so the mattress doesn't sink into the openings.

Finally, were there slide hinges or pistons in place to keep the door from slamming down on your head when you unlatch it? I will take all suggestions on anything you guys think about the camper in general, not just this issue.

We need the bunk for an August trip, so we have a little time to do it right. After three outings, we definitely need to replace it. Thanks everyone! Photos appreciated!!

189fbs bunk mattress questions

We reattached the door of the bunk after making a couple of hardware store runs, and yes, it is just that thin luan material. Hopefully, the mattress will disperse the weight of the person sleeping in the bunk. What kind of mattress do you all have in your bunk? It's got to be something that folds, or is it two separate pieces with a mattress pad on top? Does anyone use an air bed in that space? I am at a loss as to what to use.

Thank you!

That is a BIG help. :D I couldn't see that it was a two-piece from any of the on line photos. Surely, I can get four inch foam. Thank you so much for helping. I know this seems simple, but we were flummoxed about what to use.
