Roof maintenance?

Hello. Just wondering if anyone can answer a few questions we have about the roof on our rv. We are new to this and bought a used rv. We have no idea the last time the roof was sealed and not even clear what that means. Is that just the seams or the entire roof? We have a 16ft Fun Finder x160wb. The person we bought it from stored it in a heated warehouse. We think it might have set out with the first owner. It currently has no leaks and we would like to keep it that way. Can anyone give us direction-what to look for-products and processes? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have a well cared for unit, but as with all Travel Trailers, you need to be diligent with routine roof maintenance. It is best to climb up on the roof, clean and inspect at least once a year. I highly recommend this video that shows you what to look for and how to maintain it:

Each travel trailer brand has their own unique problem areas. On my 2008 it is known that the front fiberglass fascia can start to leak where the fiberglass meets the roof. Also there have been known issues with the front window seal leaking as well. I would be sure to closely inspect the joint on the roof where it meets the front fiberglass.

Also, be sure to clear out the small gutter system around the back and sides while you are up there. I had a small dent in the rear gutter in the corner where the previous owner bumped it. The dent was tight enough that it held debris (dirt, leaf material, etc.) and blocked the water from draining out that side. Because the pad the my trialed is parked was pitched to that corner, the gutter held water and began to leak through the screws holding the gutter on. This caused a small leak in the bathroom that was only discovered when I reinstalled my shower. There wasn't too much damage, but if it went undetected for too long it would have been a different story.

Again, regular visual inspection and maintenance is the key. Dicor caulk is cheap and it doesn't take much to do the trick.
