voyager vs. prodigy 2

We are the new owners of a 2012 214WSD and after its first trip last weekend are delighted with it. Our TV is 2011 Toyota Tundra 5.7. I do have a concern about the brake controller. When we picked up our unit the service rep took us out for a test drive and the brake controller acted horribly, jerking us all over he place. The rep said it needed to be adjusted and fiddled with it but still felt terrible. It is a Voyager. After the weekend we followed up with a phone call today asking about the system. He admits there is something wrong but when I asked him about the Prodigy 2 he said that they took all the Prodigies off their trucks because they had so many problems with them. I find that interesting since I have read nothing but great things about the Prodigy on this forum and others. We plan on traveling across the U.S. and Western Canada and I want to be sure we have an appropriate controller. Have read that the Voyager has trouble when traveling up and down hills. Is that correct? Thank you for any help you can provide. I have learned so much from this forum.

My brake controler has a digital % readout.
I leave it at 15% for trafic and slow roads and 20% on the highway.
I recomend you get one with a readout.
It will brake 100% for a panic stop and in between for moderate stops.

There should be a adjustment on yours you want to feel a slight tug when braking just fool around with it on a non buzy road or large parking lot.

It really sounds more like the controller isn't adjusted properly. The manual should have a pretty detailed procedure for getting it adjusted properly.

I used to have a Valley Jouney time delay controller, but now I have the Prodigy P3 proportional controller that I like much better. I found it much easier to get adjusted properly.

Thank you for your help. I thought the dealer was installing a Prodigy as I had read so many good things about it, but it came through with the Voyager. I have asked him to change over to the Prodigy and I will pay the difference. He seems reluctant and said the Prodigy is for BIG trailers. I keep reading where people with my size camper are using the Protegy and love it. I'm hoping to hear some more opinions on the voyager vs. protegy. I realized I posted to the modifications forum instead of the towing forum. I apologize. Again i really appreciate all the assistance on this forum. It is a great resource.

When I towed with my Commander (I still have the P3 in the Commander for other trailers, but, I tow with a RAM 2500 now and it has a built-in controller), I used a Prodigy P3. IMHO, one of the finest inertia brake controllers on the market. The nice thing about the P3...with it's abundance of adjustments, it will indeed handle a *big* trailer. It will also handle a popup; anything with electric or electric over hydraulics mounted to the trailer frame

It sounds as if your existing Voyager would probably work OK with enough fiddling, but, if it were me, I'd spring for the P3 and be done with it.

I've been running with the Prodigy since we got our last trailer, moved it to my RAM from the Dakota and it works great towing the 214 WSD, like that it is so easily adjusted on the fly. It is well worth it for the extra $ I think (though the Prodigy is the only modern controller I've used, it sure beats those of 20 years ago) !!!

I use a prodigy on a 2010 tundra and when properly adjusted it works great. I have to have the amps up on it for our fairly large 276 on 8-12% grades but it works fine. Smooth stopping not jerking. It's a breeze to install on the tundra. Plug and play.
