Default Added an external cooktop to my FF 189fbr

Made a two burner cooktop for my FF 189fbr that uses the trailers low pressure LP. The cooktop is a Flame King and it sits in a wood shelf that hangs off the side of the trailer.

Well done! (Actually, I prefer my burgers medium rare, but nice job anyways.)

Nice job!

I so envy all you talented people. I can come up with ideas, but no way (or talent) to implement them. That's what the husband was good for - implementing my hare-brained schemes...

Keep up the good work!!

Did you have to adapt the stove to the low pressure LP tank on the trailer? If so what did you use? Thanks!

You come up with the ideas. We'll help with the DIY "how to". Don't sell yourself short.

I used an off the shelf cook top (flame king brand). Although it has a regulator, it works just fine with the low pressure line provided by the trailer. I checked the cook top inside and it also has a regulator so I was pretty certain that this project would work.

Oh, you guys here have helped me more than you'll ever know! I would probably have had to give up my little FF had it not been for all the help I get here. Heck, I have a couple of you guys on email & cell phone-speed-dial.

However, DIY can't include drilling. I don't drill well. I go through walls, all the way to the outside, and that was something simple, like trying to mount a drink holder...

I'll have to post a pic of my latest hare-brained scheme...I believe its construction "method" will result in mostly failure, given a light breeze.

George has his mantra (Some Assembly Required), and I have mine (Widowhood Ain't For Sissies).

Michelle, I did not realize that you had a thing about drilling. Here is a tip -- first, figure out how far you want to drill. (No more than the length of the screw, for sure!!)

Then, put a "flag" of masking tape on the drill bit that matches the desired depth of the hole. When the tape reaches the board or the wall or whatever, stop!

Don't ask how I learned this trick. Sigh.

It takes a little practice, but it is really easy to get control of the drill.

The masking tape on the drill bit works well as long as one can control the 'push' on the drill into the hole being drilled.

If that should pose difficult, they make "drill bit stops" that one locks onto the drill bit that prevents the bit from drilling into the material any further and where the stop is locked onto the bit.

General Tools Drill Stop Set (7-Piece)-S838 - The Home Depot

Just an alternative option.

Wow! Wonder if my DH knows about these...never mind, he does very well with "construction " projects even though he's a teacher! That's not a put down, just that some people think music teachers aren't inclined to do much!

We have the original bar-b-que that hangs off the side of our 189 like yours. It's a mess and we aren't using it. It has the hanging bracket for the slot on the side of the trailer. How did you attach the wooden shelf to the slot? Very clever. Our bar-b-que is so bad that it's destined for the dump. We replaced it with a Cuisinart with legs. The hanging slot would be good for a side table.

MI traveler-

I used the Coleman side hanger rail that I bought from ebay. I used a flame king cooktop and set it into a plywood shelf that I sealed the surface, top and bottom with Formica. I used T molding on the edges.

That is good to know. So with that bracket anyone can make a handy shelf off of the side of their trailer.

Sadly, on the XT 276 the outside grill hanger bracket is located within inches of the main entrance door. This presents a hazard for children entering/exiting the toy hauler when grilling ... and not a favorable location for a shelf either.

We were thinking that the bar-b-que that came with our trailer (the disgustingly dirty one) would not do well hanging off the trailer anyway. Too close to the side, though I know people do it all of the time. But it would be nice to use the slot and bracket for something else. Grilling stuff? A vase of flowers, whatever....
