Not uncommon. One cause is debris (toilet paper) hanging up on the sensors inside the tank.
Quick fix is to travel with 1/2 tank full of water sloshing around to knock it down. Some say bag of ice cubes banging around helps.
If you have a black tank flush connection a few fills and dumps might do the trick.

In the future, making sure you use a tp that dissolves well and full use of the appropriate chemicals should help.

In practice I stopped relying on the tank sensors. You can tell in other ways when its time to dump!

I keep my tank sensors functioning by:
1. Using the black tank flush every time I dump the tank.
2. Always adding a black tank additive which also eliminates odors.
3. Adding fabric softner will aid keeping the sensors clean.
4. Check the tightness of the wires attached to the sensors .. if they are loose or corroded, the sensors won't give a true reading.
5. NEVER use generic toilet paper as it does NOT dissolve well.

Also the use of RV/marine toilet paper is NOT necessary as Charmin and most other 'home brands' will dissolve as well as the more expensive RV/marine toilet paper the is thin and doesn't really 'do the job.'

Simply watch this test:

And if you find your sensors not giving a good reading, simply fill your black water tank full when home and leave it sit for several days - you can add some dish soap if so desired.

Eagle’s advice is good - also, they do make a tank flush hose-end wand you an put down through the toilet to wash down the interior sides of the tank. I used it on my previous trailer and while a bit gross - it did clean the sensors

I use the black tank flush whenever I can. But I'm not yet convinced it's doing much of anything!
